Qiaoerma Martyrs’ Cemetery

This cemetery stands at the side of the Duku Highway as a way of commemorating the workers and soldiers who gave their lives to construct the highway. The mural here was first built in 1984, and the cemetery was renewed and completed in 2006, built with the donations of locals. A total of 128 martyrs are commemorated here, and their names are carved onto plaques at the back of the cemetery. When we arrived, we all instinctively took off our helmets, enveloped in the gravity of the place. The monument at the centre of the cemetery stood tall, towering over us, a testament to the bravery and sacrifice of those who came before us.
